Biobased: What It Means And Why It’s Important

Nowadays, it seems like everyone is talking about eco-conscious beauty as the focus around being kinder to our environment and ourselves increases. But at Naturtint, “eco-conscious beauty” isn’t just a buzzword; it’s part of our DNA.

For over 25 years, Naturtint has been at the forefront of reducing chemicals found in hair color and care products. In 1994, Maria del Pino Navarro, General Director of Labortorios Phergal (Naturtint’s manufacturer) traveled to the US to learn about hair color formulation from top professionals.   Maria spent countless hours in a lab working on an ammonia-free hair color formula that she felt would empower women (in Spain and around the globe) to feel confident about their hair color and themselves.

Biobased: what it means and why it’s important

From the beginning, we’ve prided ourselves on supplying products with as many naturally derived ingredients as possible chosen for their known benefits to the hair and scalp. Synthetic ingredients that you’ll never find in our products include Ammonia, Parabens, Heavy metals, Gluten, Silicone, Artificial fragrance, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Animal products, Cocamide DEA, Paraffins, and Mineral oils.

Today, our commitment to scientific innovation and providing you with nature-inspired beauty options remains the same. That’s why we’re excited to share that Naturtint permanent hair color exceeds minimum USDA Certified Biobased content for Hair Styling Products and is now a USDA Certified Biobased Product. And we’ve made history as the first permanent hair color to be certified by the USDA BioPreferred® Program.

What sets USDA BioPreferred Certified Products apart?

Simply put, these products are better for you and the environment. Biobased ingredients are derived from plants and other renewable agricultural, and forestry materials. Biobased ingredients are cost-comparative, readily available and perform as well or better than their petroleum-containing counterparts. Biobased ingredients help us increase our use of renewable resources while decreasing our use of non-renewable resources, such as petroleum. Naturtint permanent hair color is certified as 79% biobased.

Naturtint also uses the Global International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Global Standard 16128. This standard defines naturally derived as plant or mineral derived materials and water that have undergone limited processing. Naturtint naturally derived percentage varies between product lines and ranges from 92% to 99%.

Why did Naturtint pursue biobased certification?

The main reason is because we’re committed to maintaining the highest standards and are always innovating to provide you with the best products to help you achieve gorgeous hair at home. At Naturtint, we want the best for you and the environment, so we aim to replace as many synthetic ingredients as possible with naturally derived alternatives for radiant results you can feel good about.

We understand that no permanent hair color can be completely natural. After all, there must be some synthetic ingredients for permanent hair color to work. However, Naturtint strives to use the highest-quality formulas with the lowest number of chemical ingredients possible. Learn more about our commitment to eco-conscious beauty here.
